TV/Film Sector – Beware of Hackers.…!!
Encryption/ransom hacks – the second – largest cyber risk in the industry.
All businesses are vulnerable, but the entertainment industry reliance on secrecy renders it vulnerable to exposure. Films and television episodes lose much of their cash value after the first viewing. That makes early release by hackers a costly crime. As an example it is estimated that an illegal premature release of Expendables 4 cost the film company $100M.
Hackers are aware that simply uploading unreleased commissions online can reduce its profitability by as much as a fifth.
Hackers are aware of the tight completion and delivery deadlines imposed by broadcasters and studios and can spot an opportunity for extortion by preventing a release. Post production companies must be vigilant of the potential for security breaches including accidental human error.
Cyber and reputational management cover do not form part of the standard TV/Film production package.
